hardware & linux compatibility review – EDIT: why are people marking this down? *TONS* of people buy these for exactly the reason i am! it’s an insanely cheap linux server just waiting to be born!

– Wonderful Device. Must have. Negative reviews are possibly due to configuration or bad storage drive. It works as Media Server too. What else can we expect at this price?

Handy little device… – I have used this for a month now and had no issues with it(other than it being a little slow…but then what do you expect? it has to from your network out to the internet and verify with their server then you have to go out to that server and connect with it…I wished they could do a local connection) (with out hacking it).

Quick Setup but unreliable – I disconnected the Pogoplug Mobile from my system. Pogoplug Backup, for me anyway, has proved unreliable. A couple of days ago, and after performing as advertised for some days, Pogoplug Backup detached the hard drive and then, once the hard drive was reconnected, started backing up files that I had disabled via the “Stop” option. This is not the first time I have experienced the hard drive detachment issue. Coincidentally with the start of the heretofore disabled My Photos, My Videos, and My Music backups; my desktop’s performance slowed to a crawl. I attribute the performance problem to the unplanned start of those 3 backups. Simplicity is nice and I do not quarrel with Pogoplug’s claim of a sixty second setup. However, configuration is a issue. There are four default backups which cannot be modified and they are: My Documents, My Photos, My Videos and My Music. The user can add others, but is stuck with those four. My Windows XP machine’s “My Documents” directory includes Music and Photos. So starting the “My Music” and “My Photos” backups is unnecessary. Furthermore, I only need periodic backups of “My Videos”. Enabling these three backups is a waste of storage capacity for me. There are “Start/Stop” options but, as I have learned, the user cannot trust the STOP option. In a prior work life, I provided network and PC support for small and medium sized companies and would have recommended against any attempt to include the Pogoplug device in the system. Based on my experience, the Pogoplug would demand too much support time. I tried re-purposing the device and discovered that my particular model did not possess the outputs needed. I have since pulled the device, placed it in a box, and donated it to our local thrift shop.
